Weekend Update | Blue Hair and Green Juices

I Went | Those of you who saw my Resolutions post will know I'm trying to keep up with yoga properly this year.  I'm planning on practising at home with the help of YogaGlo (recently discovered via Into the Gloss) along with weekend classes at The Life Centre.

I Wore | In light of the above, good yoga wear is something I really want to invest in. I know its purely psychological, but having decent kit really does make you want to work out. That's what I'm telling myself anyway... Sweaty Betty is always a good go-to for leggings and then I tend to wear t-shirts by LNA or tank tops from HnM and Gap. Really liking the look of Fillipa K's soft sport range too - the cropped yoga leggings, yoga bra top and sporty sheer pullover are three favourites.

I watched | Blue is the Warmest Colour. Never seen anything like it and it really did blow me away. Raw, real and incredibly moving, the main actress who plays Adele is beyond amazing. I felt really reluctant to let go when it ended after becoming so invested in the characters and their relationships over the course of the film (close to 3 hours but you barely notice). Go see it, if only to be able to join in the conversation and controversy surrounding it.

I read | Finally started a new book - keeping on top of those resolutions - in the form of Summer Lies by German writer Bernhard Schlink (he also wrote The Reader). A collection of short stories, all the stories are about love, both falling in and out of it. I've only read a couple but so far its subtly written and engaging - just don't to get all the answers.

I drank | Along with the rest of entire world, I am big into green juices right now. On the high street, Pret's new take on the trend is surprisingly good (nutritionally it looks a-ok too) and easy for those of us out of reach from a proper juice bar. Crussh's Lean Green juice is also a favourite, especially with added ginger and spirulina to ward of winter colds. Really looking forward to trying Roots and Bulbs' cold pressed concoctions in Marylebone and Alkame smoothies once they launch too.

I ate | Sweet tooth reared its ugly head in a big way this weekend; way too much Dairy Milk Daim bar and delicious dulce de leche ice cream at the Curzon in Soho.

Weekend Update

This weekend saw a very welcome escape from London to go and stay with friends in the Cotswold countryside for a couple of lazy days mainly revolving around eating, antiques-hunting and sofa-lounging. Heaven.

I went | To Tetbury in Wiltshire Gloucestershire for an afternoon of antiques hunting. Jamie and I came away with some Victorian medicine bottles, a silver cocktail shaker, a mother-of-pearl box for playing cards, some old boxes of photographic film and a big old wine bottle for a candle. You can see some our haul on my Instagram.

I ate | A lot! From home-cooked pork belly and brownies, to baked camembert with cranberry at The Wild Duck, this was winter eating at its best.

I drank | Really into all things Beetroot juice. With blueberry and/or apple for sweetness.

I watched |  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Accurate adaptation and awesome visually - might feel a little lacking in substance for those who haven't read the books. One of those stories that really benefits from a narrator and being in Katniss's head.

I wore | My vintage fur coat bought in Paris many years ago is once again getting lots of wear now its getting colder.

I bought |  Inspired by our host's insanely cosy sitting room, I've invested in some grey throws to have on hand as it gets colder. This striped one and this waffle throw from John Lewis are two favourites.

In other news, I've finally got round to adding some pieces to my Tictail store with more to come very soon. Iro, Isabel Marant, H&M and Free People all up there.... Check it all here.

Weekend Catch Up

We took two days off work and ran away from London for a night at Babington House, the Cotswolds’ chapter of Soho House, last week which made for an extra long, spoiling weekend. And after a series of long days/weeks/months of magazine editing on Jamie’s behalf, we were more than ready for the mini getaway.

As wonderful as the set-up, grounds and service is, our food was the only aspect that was sadly a little disappointing – even more so when you consider the hefty price tags attached. But the fluffy beds, roaring fires and lovely atmosphere more than made up for a somewhat lacking dinner.

The rest of the weekend consisted of friend’s birthdays, cinema trips, baking experiments and plenty of boring but necessary life admin.

I ate…. An avocado-filled Byron burger and homemade lemon and cardamom cake baked by yours truly. I used this recipe and just added the zest and juice of half a lemon. It turned out really good and got the office seal of approval on Monday.

I drank…. The insanely good ginger tea at Babington’s Cowshed spa (dee-licious) and Grey Goose Le Fizz cocktails.

I went… To Babington House! Swimming in the bath-like indoor pool, sweating in the sauna, trying and failing to learn the ropes at chess and lots of red wine were all part of our cosy two days. I also spent a good couple of hours of lounging, quite literally, in a robe, drinking tea and catching up on magazines (you can probably tell from the pictures above that I was rarely without a cup of something hot.). Upmarket slobbing-out at its best.

I watched… Gravity in 3D. Go see for a vertigo-inducing (in a good way) spectacle that succeeds in wowing despite the oh-so-cheesy script.

I wore… Lots of grey, the warmer the better: a v-neck jumper and this knitted beanie. My Vans came in handy for hopping from the room to pool and back again too.

Movie Me Now

Whether its going to the cinema (the Curzon and Electric are my favourites in London), watching one of the many DVDs from our 'to watch' pile, reading reviews in the Sunday papers or listening to my favourite geeky film podcast (Film Spotting for anyone interested) in the bath, movies are a massive part of my downtime. So much so, I don't really feel like I've had a proper weekend unless I've zoned out to at least one film.

So I thought it might be fun to do the occasional 'recently watched' post to highlight a few of the films, both old and new, I've seen and loved of late. I tend to get carried away with these sorts of things so I'm going to be strict with myself and keep it all as brief as possible!

So if you're in need of something to watch this weekend or just reminding of an old favourite, I hope this gives you a little bit of inspiration.  Let me know what you think and if you too have seen any of the below-I'd love to know what you think.

I Wish // Nobody Knows

After being totally won over by I Wish after seeing it at the ICA a couple of months ago, I decided to investigate some more of Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeka's films, starting with the 2004 Nobody Knows.  Undeniably sweet, I Wish is the best kind of visual soul food, meandering along to a heart-warming ending that's saved from veering towards sentimental by a good dose of dry humour and realism. So one day, while off-sick from work with a thick cold, I curled up in bed with Nobody Knows expecting much of the same.

The film sees a group of children left alone in a small apartment after their wayward mother appears to have left once and for all. Akira, the eldest brother on the cusp of adulthood, is left in charge of his 3 siblings and has to juggle keeping his family together while also dealing with the turbulence of being a teenager.

Half coming-of-age melodrama, half tragic tale of survival and loneliness, Nobody Knows is one of those films that really gets under your skin and despite feeling quite slow while you're watching, it stays with you for a long time afterwards.

Buy the DVD here.

Rachel Getting Married

A heady mix of love, loss, addition, grief and one rollercoaster of a wedding, Rachel Getting Married is an amazingly real portrayal of a normal family dealing with extraordinary circumstances and emotions. A far cry from her Princess Diairies days, Anne Hathaway is really brilliant as damaged Kym while Rosemarie DeWitt is fast becoming one of my favourite actors for her incredibly natural way of performing.

Desperate, tragic and hopeful all at once, Rachel Getting Married might not be one for a Sunday evening (you've been warned), but its beautiful cinematography and intense performances make it well worth a watch.

Buy the DVD here.

The Sessions

I never had myself down as a much of a weeper when it came to movies, but in the last year or so I've become much more of crier and The Sessions is case in point of this more emotional me.

I actually saw this a little while ago, around Christmas time, but couldn't not include it in my first film post. Telling the story of Mark O'Brien, a man reduced to a horizontal life in an iron lung after contracting polio at 6 years old, who employs a sex surrogate to help him lose his virginity, The Sessions is more heart-warming, charming and funny than its subject matter might belie. The fact it's an entirely true story just makes it all the more moving.

On a visual level, I loved the 1970s San Francisco setting but it's the performances that really sets the film apart. Having only seen him in pretty sinister roles previously, John Hawkes was a revelation in terms of talent and sensitivity.

Engaged from start to finish, I was left feeling incredibly humbled in a flurry of bittersweet tears that took a full afternoon to recover from.
